I've got shoes for miles...
And the miles take a toll on the soles and heels. Instead of throwing out your shoes once the heel has worn away, revealing the nail, or once the sole loses the treads, opt for a shoe cobbler. Here's five things a good shoe cobbler can do for your sole(s):
1. The Perfect Fit: breaking in your shoes can be a killer. A cobbler can stretch your shoes to fit your feet. A good cobbler will stretch the shoes with you there. They should have you try on the shoes with every incremental stretch to ensure they are the perfect fit.
2. Get a Grip: Winter means ice. For some reason there are lots of boots that have mediocre treads. When snow is on the ground you can slip really easily. Cobblers can put new treads on your shoes - and the good ones will offer you different grades and ensure the rubber matches the look of your shoes.
3. A Shoe of a Difference Colour: Did you know you can dye your shoes? Turn your brown boots into black one, or red heels into purple pumps. There aren't many cobblers who specialize in dyeing shoes, but if you can find one, it will breath new life into your wardrobe.
4. Go Shopping in Your Closet: Ever heard of upcycling? You can do this with your shoes. Bring your worn boots, sandals, heels, dress shoes, and more, to a cobbler and they can put a new heel on - even if the nail is starting to show. The can also add new soles, sew or glue seems that have come undone, reinforce the toe, and even rebuild the straps of sandals that were ripped out of the sole.
5. Go the extra mile: A good cobbler does more than what your come in for. They evaluate your shoes and recommend ways to make them look better. When you pick up your shoes, the cobbler should show them to you before you pay. If there are any problems, that's when you should say something. The cobblers I've dealt who did a great job all did this one thing: they buffed my shoes and cleaned up the look for free. A good cobbler wants repeat business so look for someone who offers awesome customer care.
